Andean Community convenes an Andean Committee meeting against Illegal Mining - 2016

A work meeting will be convened for participants of the Andean Committee against Illegal Mining (CAMI), as an initiative of the Andean Community’s General Secretariat, to continue coordinating joint actions to tackle illegal mining and related activities in a comprehensive manner.

This work group, created with Decision 797 in October 2014, will meet in May.

It seeks to optimize control and vigilance regarding import, export, transportation, processing, trading and any kind of mineral and mineral-related product transaction coming from illegal mining, as well as to oversee machinery equipment, inputs and hydrocarbons that may be used for this illegal activity.

It also seeks to develop cooperation actions that will contribute to mining formalization, to fostering social and environmental responsibility and to promote the use of efficient methods and technologies to use natural resources efficiently and foster environmental sustainability.

The committee’s V reunion will convene representatives from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Interior, Defense, Mining, Environment as well as delegates from the Public Ministry, the Police and other authorities from the four Andean countries.

According to the provisional agenda, Colombia will be in charge of the committee’s Pro Tempore Presidency, and CAN reengineering process results will be presented, as well as General Secretariats Reports.
